AYA study
BZKF-AYA study to improve the chances of recovery for young patients with tumors of the central nervous system
Adolescents and young adults (AYA = Adolescents and Young Adults, 15-39 years) with a malignant tumor of the central nervous system (CNS) face particular challenges. The disease is difficult to treat, the chances of recovery are often limited and late effects can occur even after successful treatment.
The AYA study of the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research (BZKF) was launched to improve diagnosis and treatment in this patient group. In this project, pediatricians and experts from adult medicine work hand in hand. The aim is to gain new insights through joint research and to sustainably improve care for AYAs with brain tumors.
The research project was jointly developed by the study groups "Primary and secondary brain tumors in adults" and "CNS tumors of childhood and adolescence" at the BZKF.
The treatment of adolescents and young adults (AYA, 15-39 years) with malignant intra-axial CNS tumors such as IDH-mutated gliomas, medulloblastomas and ependymomas is not yet curable in all cases. Since tumor biology and clinical requirements are comparable regardless of age, an integrated treatment concept by pediatric and adult neuro-oncologists appears to make sense. In Germany, a comprehensive, prospective pipeline that systematically combines biomaterials, imaging (MRI, FET-PET), radiotherapy data, tissue and liquid biopsies as well as clinical information is still lacking.
The non-interventional study at all six BZKF sites in Bavaria aims to establish precisely this. It collects and integrates data on imaging, radiotherapy, biopsies and molecular markers. The aim is to improve diagnostics and prognosis, identify new therapeutic approaches and sustainably optimize the care of AYA patients with high-risk CNS tumours.
